ZYTIGA (Abiraterone)

What is this medication?

ZYTIGA (Abiraterone)
Antiandrogen, Antineoplastic Agent

ZYTIGA (Abiraterone) is a CYP17 inhibitor indicated for use in combination with prednisone for the treatment of patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer who have received prior chemotherapy containing docetaxel.

How does this medication work?

ZYTIGA (Abiraterone) irreversibly inhibits CYP17 which is required for androgen biosynthesis which in turn leads to no dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) and androstenedione.

How should I take this medication?

Oral: Take 1000mg once daily.

How to Take:  Must be taken on an empty stomach (at least 1 hour before and 2 hours after any food).

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting ZYTIGA (Abiraterone), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take.  Abiraterone should be used with caution in those with a history of cardiovascular disease. Monitor  blood pressure, serum potassium, and edema at least monthly.  Watch for signs and symptoms of adrenocortical insufficiency such as fatigue, salt cravings, lightheadedness, low blood pressure and weight loss.  Hepatotoxicity has been associated with Abiraterone, and monitoring of liver enzymes is recommended.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Hypertension, edema, fatigue, insomnia, hypertriglyceridemia, hyperglycemia, hypernatremia, hypokalemia, hypophosphatemia, hot flashes, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, lymphocytopenia, elevated liver enzymes, joint swelling and pain, muscle pain, upper respiratory tract infection, dyspnea, nasopharyngitis,
