SYMBICORT/VANNAIR (Budesonide/Formoterol)

What is this medication?

Budesonide+Formoterol/Symbicort
Inhaled corticosteroid; Long acting Beta2 Adrenergic Agonist

Budesonide+Formoterol/Symbicort is indicated for asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (may also be used for conditions not listed)

How does this medication work?

Formoterol relaxes the smooth muscle in the bronchioles via the Beta 2 adrenergic receptor. Budesonide may reduce the formation, release, and activity of inflammatory mediators such as kinins, histamine and prostaglandins. Reduces cell migration to the affected area and reverses the dilation and blood vessel permeability result in decreased access of cells to the site.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Budesonide+Formoterol/Symbicort make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (lactose for Canadian product- note that this is for true allergy not dietary lactose intolerance which is from a lack of lactase), medications you currently take, if you have cardiovascular disease, diabetes, liver disease, have hypokalemia, are pregnant, or breastfeeding

How should I take this medication?

Canada Turbohaler (dry powder)
100mcg budesonide; 6mcg formoterol per dose
200mcg budesonide; 6mcg formoterol per dose

US Metered Dose Inhaler (puffer)
80mcg budesonide; 4.5mcg formoterol per dose
160mcg budesonide; 4.5mcg formoterol per dose

Generally, 1-2 doses once or twice a day depending on patient response and severity of condition

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day, store at room temperature.  Follow priming instructions for the product received and make sure the pharmacist teaches you proper use/care of the device.   Rinse mouth with water and spit out after every use of medication to reduce risk of oral thrush.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 20 to 25° C (68 to 77° F) protected from light, heat, and moisture. Store with the mouthpiece down. The contents of your SYMBICORT canister are under pressure. Do not puncture or throw the canister into a fire or incinerator.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Headache, nasopharyngitis, upper respiratory tract infection
