What is this medication?

QVAR (Beclomethasone Dipropionate)
Corticosteroid, Inhalant (Oral)

QVAR (Beclomethasone Dipropionate) is officially indicated for the treatment of asthma but is sometimes used off-label for use in stable chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

How does this medication work?

Controls the rate of protein synthesis; depresses the migration of polymorphonuclear leukocytes, fibroblasts; reverses capillary permeability and lysosomal stabilization at the cellular level to prevent or control inflammation

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Beclomethasone QVAR (Beclomethasone Dipropionate) make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, that it can have a negative effect on the HPA axis through adrenal suppression, can cause immunosuppression and rare cases of vasculitis have been reported.

How should I take this medication?

US Labeling:
40-320 mcg twice daily

Canadian Labeling:
Inhale 50 to 400mcg twice daily

How to Take: Prime canister by spraying twice into the air prior to initial use or if not in use for >10 days. Patients using a spacer should inhale immediately due to decreased amount of medication that is delivered with a delayed inspiration. Do not need to shake before use.  Rinse mouth with water (and spit out) after inhalation.  Do not wash or place inhaler in water.  Clean mouthpiece using a dry cloth or tissue once weekly.  Discard after the “discard by” date or when dose indicator display window reads “0”, even if canister is not completely empty.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Store the canister at room temperature, between 68 °F to 77°F (20°C - 25°C). Excursions between 59°F and 86°F (15°C and 30°C) are permitted. Store away from heat, direct light, and moisture. Do not freeze. Do not keep this medicine inside a car where it could be exposed to extreme heat or cold. Do not poke holes in the canister or throw it into a fire, even if the canister is empty.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Oral candidiasis (rinse mouth with water without swallowing after each use to reduce risk), headache and pharyngitis
