What is this medication?

Bromfenac (Ophthalmic), Prolensa/BromSite
Ophthalmic Nonsteroidal Anti-inflammatory Drug (NSAID); Cyclooxygenase Inhibitor

Bromfenac (Ophthalmic), Prolensa/BromSite is indicated for the management of postoperative ocular inflammation and pain following cataract surgery.

How does this medication work?

Inhibits cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 which decreases prostaglandin precursor production thereby lowering prostaglandins which are important inflammatory mediators.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting Bromfenac (Ophthalmic), Prolensa/BromSite make sure your physician is aware of any allergies (NSAID) or medications you currently take, if you have a bleeding disorder, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, prior ocular disease, if you are pregnant, or breastfeeding.

How should I take this medication?

Apply to affected eye(s) once daily as directed.  Various practitioners have different preferences for how long prior to surgery the drops should be initiated and how long after that they should be used, but it is common to start one day prior and ending 14 days post-operation.

How to Take Bromfenac (Ophthalmic), Prolensa/BromSite: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, use consistently at same times each day unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.  Apply light pressure to lacrimal sac (inside corner of eye near nose) for 60 seconds after application to prevent drainage of the drop from eye.

You Need to Avoid: Remove contact lenses before applying and wait at least 15 minutes after administration before reinserting.
