PAXIL (Paroxetine)

What is this medication? 

PAXIL (Paroxetine)
Antidepressant, Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor

PAXIL (Paroxetine) officially indicated for generalized anxiety disorder, major depressive disorder, obsessive compulsive disorder, panic disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, social anxiety disorder, and vasomotor symptoms associated with menopause. It is also commonly prescribed off-label for body dysmorphic disorder and premature ejaculation. (may be used for conditions not listed)

ALERT: WARNING
Suicidal thoughts and behaviors:
Antidepressants increased the risk of suicidal thoughts and behaviors in pediatric and young adult patients in short-term studies. Closely monitor all antidepressant-treated patients for clinical worsening and for emergence of suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Paroxetine is not approved for use in pediatric patients.

How does this medication work? 

Tetracyclic antidepressant that has antagonist activity on the presynaptic alpha2-adrenergic receptor which increases the release of norepinephrine and serotonin.  It is also a potent antagonist at 5-HT2 and 5-HT3 serotonergic receptors as well as H1 histamine receptors.  It has moderate alpha1-adrengeric and muscarinic antagonist activity as well.  Unlike many antidepressants it does not affect serotonin or norepinephrine reuptake. 

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: Take 10mg-60mg once daily

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, swallow whole, take consistently at same times each day with or without food unless otherwise directed, store at room temperature.

You Need to Avoid: Do not stop this medication without tapering dose down over time to prevent withdrawal symptoms (nausea, diarrhea, sweating, headaches, agitation, insomnia, anxiety, tremor, vertigo, dizziness). This medication may increase psychomotor impairment from alcohol so caution should be used if alcohol is to be consumed.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting paroxetine make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have cardiovascular disease, liver disease, kidney disease, a seizure disorder, bipolar disorder, or are pregnant or breastfeeding.  This medication also has risk of causing serotonin syndrome especially if combined with other serotonergic drugs.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication? 

Diaphoresis (sweating), decreased libido, constipation, decreased appetite, diarrhea, dyspepsia (indigestion), nausea, dry mouth, difficulty ejaculating, dizziness, drowsiness, headache, insomnia, asthenia (low energy), and tremor.
