What is this medication?

MOTEGRITY/RESOTRAN (Prucalopride) is officially indicated for chronic idiopathic constipation but is also prescribed off-label for small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO).

How does this medication work?

MOTEGRITY/RESOTRAN (Prucalopride) is a selective, high affinity 5-HT4 receptor agonist whose action at the receptor site promotes cholinergic and noradrenergic, noncholinergic neurotransmission by enteric neurons leading to stimulation of the peristaltic reflex, intestinal secretions, and gastrointestinal motility.

How should I take this medication?

Chronic idiopathic constipation
Oral: Take 2mg once daily; consider adjunctive laxative therapy if no bowel movement within ≥3 consecutive days.

Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth – Relapse/Recurrence (Off-Label)
Oral: Take 0.5mg to 1mg at bedtime.  

How to Take: Can be taken with or without food.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting MOTEGRITY/RESOTRAN (Prucalopride), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take. Use with caution in patients who perform tasks that require mental alertness. When using Prucalopride, closely monitor persistent depression or suicidal thoughts and behaviors. Patients with renal impairment should also be monitored when using Prucalopride.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times.  Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C).  Protect from light.  Keep the container tightly closed.  Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Headache, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea.
