What is this medication?

MetroGel (for the skin) is used to treat skin lesions caused by rosacea.

MetroGel may also be used for purposes not listed in this medication guide.

How should I use this medication?

Follow all directions on your prescription label and read all medication guides or instruction sheets. Use the medicine exactly as directed.

Do not take by mouth. Topical medicine is for use only on the skin.

Wash and gently dry your skin before applying MetroGel.

Apply the medication in a thin layer and rub in completely. You may apply cosmetics after using MetroGel.

Do not use MetroGel to treat any skin condition that has not been checked by your doctor.

Use this medicine for the full prescribed length of time, even if your symptoms quickly improve. Skipping doses can increase your risk of infection that is resistant to medication.

Call your doctor if your symptoms do not improve, or if they get worse while using MetroGel.

What if I miss a dose?

Use the medicine as soon as you can, but skip the missed dose if it is almost time for your next dose. Do not use two doses at one time.

How should I store this medication?

Store at room temperature away from moisture or heat.

What should I avoid while using metronidazole topical?

Do not use MetroGel in the vagina.

Avoid getting MetroGel in your eyes.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Get emergency medical help if you have signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.

MetroGel may cause serious side effects. Call your doctor at once if you have:

  • numbness, tingling, or burning pain in your hands or feet; or
  • stinging or burning when you apply MetroGel.

Common side effects of MetroGel may include:

  • burning or stinging;
  • skin redness or irritation;
  • dry, scaly, or itchy skin; or
  • cold symptoms such as stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat.
