What is this medication?
Atorvastatin, Lipitor
HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitor
Atorvastatin, Lipitor is indicated for the prevention of hypercholesterolemia, and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
How does this medication work?
Atorvastatin, Lipitor lower cholesterol and lipoprotein levels by inhibiting HMG-CoA reductase and cholesterol synthesis in the liver and by increasing the number of hepatic LDL receptors on the cell-surface to enhance uptake and catabolism of LDL. Atorvastatin, Lipitor also exhibits anti-inflammatory properties and has been shown to improve endothelial function by reducing inflammation at the site of coronary plaque and by inhibiting platelet aggregation.
How should I take this medication?
Oral: 40mg to 80mg daily depending upon the indication.
How to Take: Take with food at anytime of the day.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting Atorvastatin, Lipitor make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, you may experience severe muscle pain. If that is the case, please seek your doctor immediately.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Diarrhea, joint and muscle pain, nasopharyngitis.
