What is this medication?

GILENYA (Fingolimod)
Sphingosine 1-Phosphate (S1P) Receptor Modulator

GILENYA (Fingolimod) is a sphingosine 1-phosphate receptor modulator indicated for the treatment of patients with relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis to reduce the frequency of clinical exacerbations and to delay the accumulation of physical disability.

How does this medication work? 

GILENYA (Fingolimod) binds to sphingosine 1-phosphate receptors 1, 3, 4, and 5. Fingolimod-phosphate blocks the lymphocytes’ ability to emerge from lymph nodes; therefore, the amount of lymphocytes available to the central nervous system is decreased, which reduces central inflammation.

How should I take this medication? 

Oral: Take 0.5mg daily.

How to Take: Take orally with or without food.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting GILENYA (Fingolimod), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies and medications you currently take. Fingolimod can cause a decrease in heart rate. Watch for signs and symptoms of bradycardia for at least 6 hours after the first dose. If you develop a heart rate <45 bpm, or a new onset of 2nd degree or higher atrioventricular block should be monitored until resolution of the finding. Fingolimod may increase the risk of infections.  Monitor for signs and symptoms of infection during treatment and for two months after discontinuation. Macular edema can occur with or without visual symptoms. Fingolimod may increase liver transaminases. Assess liver enzymes if hepatic injury is suspected.  Discontinue Fingolimod if significant liver injury occurs.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Protect from light. Keep the container tightly closed. Properly dispose of any unused medication after the expiration date.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain, elevated liver enzymes, headache, influenza, cough, sinusitis.
