COMBIVENT RESPIMAT (Ipratropium Bromide/Salbutamol)

What is this medication?

COMBIVENT (Ipratropium/Salbutamol)
Bronchodilator, Anticholinergic Agent, Beta 2 Agonist

COMBIVENT (Ipratropium/Salbutamol) is officially indicated for the treatment of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

How does this medication work? 

Ipratropium inhibits acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites in the smooth muscle of the bronchioles resulting in bronchodilation. Nasal application reduces secretions of serous and seromucous glands. 

Albuterol/Salbutamol relaxes the smooth muscle in the bronchioles via the beta 2 adrenergic receptor

How should I take this medication? 

Inhalation: Take 1 inhalation 4 times daily (maximum: 6 inhalations/day).

How to Take: Prior to first use (or if not used in >21 days), point towards ground and actuate until aerosol cloud is seen, then repeat 3 additional times before use. If not used for >3 days; actuate once before use. Clean the mouthpiece (including the metal part inside the mouthpiece) at least once a week with a damp cloth or tissue only.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting COMBIVENT (Ipratropium/Salbutamol), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have diabetes, glaucoma, hyperthyroidism, hypokalemia, kidney disease, seizures, cardiovascular disease, prostate hyperplasia, are pregnant, or breastfeeding.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take more than one dose (two puffs) per day.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of the reach of children at all times. Store at room temperature, 15 to 30° C (59°F to 86°F) protected from light, heat, and moisture. Do not freeze.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Bronchitis, COPD exacerbation, sinusitis, headache, nervousness, tremor, upper respiratory infection, rhinitis, bronchospasm, pharyngitis, tachycardia.
