What is this medication?
ATROVENT HFA (Ipratropium)
Bronchodilator, Anticholinergic Agent
ATROVENT HFA (Ipratropium) is officially indicated for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. It is also used off-label for acute asthma exacerbations.
How does this medication work?
Ipratropium/Atrovent inhibits acetylcholine at parasympathetic sites in the smooth muscle of the bronchioles resulting in bronchodilation.
How should I take this medication?
Inhalation: Inhale one to two puffs four times daily (maximum: 12 puffs daily).
Note: For severe cases of asthma, the dosage may exceed the maximum recommended dose.
How to Take: HFAs should be shaken first and a few priming puffs should be sprayed before first use or if the inhaler has not been used in 2 to 3 weeks.
What should I watch for while using this medication?
Before starting ATROVENT HFA (Ipratropium), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, if you have narrow angle glaucoma, prostate hyperplasia, are pregnant or breastfeeding.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
How should I store this medication?
Keep out of reach of children. Store at 25°C (77°F); excursions permitted to 15° to 30°C (59° to 86°F). For optimal results, the canister should be at room temperature before use.
Contents Under Pressure: Do not puncture. Do not use or store near heat or open flame. Exposure to temperatures above 120°F may cause bursting. Never throw the inhaler into a fire or incinerator.
What are the possible side effects of using this medication?
Bronchitis, COPD exacerbation, sinusitis, headache. It may rarely cause paradoxical bronchospasm which may be misinterpreted as lack of effect. If symptoms worsen after using, discontinue the medication.
