What is this medication?

ALVESCO (Ciclesonide)
Corticosteroid, Inhalant (Oral)

ALVESCO (Ciclesonide) is indicated for the treatment of asthma.

How does this medication work?

ALVESCO (Ciclesonide) is a glucocorticoid prodrug which means that after it is inhaled it is broken down in the lungs by esterase to its active metabolite des-ciclesonide which is a corticosteroid with a high affinity for glucocorticoid receptors and exhibits anti-inflammatory activity.  The mechanism of action for corticosteroids is believed to be a combination of three important properties − anti-inflammatory activity, immunosuppressive properties, and antiproliferative actions.

How should I take this medication? 

US Labeling:
Inhalation: Inhale 80mcg to 320mcg twice daily.

Canadian Labeling:
Inhalation: Inhale 100mcg to 800mcg daily.

How to Take: Prime the inhaler by actuating 3 times before the first use or when the inhaler has not been used for >10 consecutive days; do not need to shake before use.  Rinse mouth with water (and spit out) after inhalation.

What should I watch for while using this medication? 

Before starting ALVESCO (Ciclesonide), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies or medications you currently take, that it can have a negative effect on the HPA axis through adrenal suppression, can cause immunosuppression and rare cases of vasculitis have been reported.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose. Do not take double or extra doses.

How should I store this medication?

Keep out of reach of children. Store at room temperature, 59 to 86° F (15 to 30° C). Do not wash or place inhaler in water. Clean mouthpiece using a dry cloth or tissue once weekly.  Discard after the “discard by” date or when dose indicator display window reads “0”, even if canister is not completely empty.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Oral candidiasis (rinse mouth with water without swallowing after each use to reduce risk), headache and nasopharyngitis.
