What is this medication?

ADVAIR HFA (Fluticasone/Salmeterol)
Inhaled corticosteroid; Long acting Beta 2 Adrenergic Agonist

ADVAIR HFA (Fluticasone/Salmeterol) is indicated for the treatment of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

How does this medication work?

Salmeterol relaxes the smooth muscle in the bronchioles via the beta2-adrenergic receptor. Fluticasone may reduce the formation, release, and activity of inflammatory mediators such as kinins, histamine and prostaglandins.  It reduces cell migration to the affected area and reverses the dilation and blood vessel permeability result in decreased access of cells to the site.

What should I watch for while using this medication?

Before starting ADVAIR HFA (Fluticasone/Salmeterol), make sure your physician is aware of any allergies, medications you take, and current medical conditions. Fluticasone/Salmeterol can cause mouth and throat candidiasis.  Remember to rinse your mouth with water following inhalation. Fluticasone/Salmeterol has been shown to increase the risk of pneumonia in patients with COPD.  Fluticasone/Salmeterol can worsen existing infections and should be used with caution in patients with infections.  Hypercorticism and adrenal suppression can occur with high dosages or at the regular dosage in susceptible individuals. If such changes occur, discontinue use. Fluticasone/Salmeterol should be used with caution with cardiovascular and central nervous system disorders, glaucoma and cataracts. Fluticasone/Salmeterol can cause eosinophilic conditions, hypokalemia, and hyperglycemia.

How should I take this medication?

Inhalation: Use 2 inhalations twice daily.

How to Take: Follow instructions provided by physician/pharmacy label, take consistently at same times each day. Follow priming instructions for the product received and make sure the pharmacist teaches you proper use/care of the device as there are various styles of inhaler available containing this combination. Rinse mouth with water and spit out after every use of medication to reduce risk of oral thrush.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose of medication, try to take it as soon as possible.  However, if it is almost time for your next dose, take only that scheduled dose.  Do not take double or extra doses to make up for the missed dose.

How should I store this medication?

Keep this and all medication out of the reach of children.  Store at 20° to 25°C (68° to 77°F). Store in a dry place away from direct heat and sunlight.

What are the possible side effects of using this medication?

Headache, upper respiratory tract infection, pneumonia, pharyngitis, dysphonia, oral candidiasis, bronchitis, cough, nausea, vomiting and musculoskeletal pain.
